Well Wilders, I love being at the beach and seeing dolphins swimming way off in the distance. The other day I was able to get up close with these beautiful creatures and jump in the water alongside them, argh! Very cool! (:
The crew and I jumped onboard the "Temptation" - a huge sailing catamaran with a dolphin swim
license that hits the waters just off Glenelg in South Australia.
These guys don't need to look for dolphins - over the years they've gained the trust of the local
pod of wild dolphins and they come over to see them.
Although they interact closely with humans, the dolphins are completely wild. They aren't rewarded for
coming over, but their curious nature means they like to swim by the boat and check out what's happening!
The gulf is home to over a thousand common and bottlenose dolphins and over the course of the day, pods
swim over to and around the boat – they're so curious and playful!
When a pod of dolphins is nearby, the crew yell out "Swimmers in," and everyone grabs their snorkel and
goes into the water behind the boat, holding onto a long rope. You then wait to see what the dolphins
decide to do - lots of them swim right past and underneath you! IT WAS SO COOL! They'd come
within about a metre of me sometimes, swimming so gracefully too - awesome.
The guys who work on the boat everyday recognise individual dolphins by their dorsal fins and markings.
Sometimes, regular dolphins will swim over with new dolphins and "introduce" these new recruits to the boat!
What a day!
Talk to ya soon guys,
Take it easy!
Peace :P xox
