I thought sending me on a SCUBA diving trip in the middle of winter could have been slight punishment… until I found out I was going to Heron Island!
My mission was to spend a week on this Island in the Great Barrier Reef, small enough to walk around in half an hour, and surrounded by the brightest of blue water and sand so white you needed sunnies to look at it… half my luck!
I had heard about the amazing marine life that call Heron home, but it wasn’t until I put my head under water I almost lost my breath. Within minutes, we were swimming through every type of coral, anemone, schools of unbelievably colourful tropical fish, and turtles! Heron is know for being a favourite nesting ground of turtles and every year hundreds make their way to the sand to lay their eggs.
We were also lucky enough to see 2 baby sharks… which to be honest I was a little nervous about being so close to, but they completely ignored us- phew!
Favourite moment though was becoming best buds with a manta ray. OH MY GOODNESS these things are massive- I’m talking twice the length of my arm span! They were so beautiful to watch gliding through the water, and friendly too! I thought they’d be scared of us but we just sat at the bottom on the sand and there was one which was just swimming up and over the camera… I started to get a little worried I might lose my job to him
