Nat treks to Phillip Island off Victoria in search of penguins and koalas.
Hi, it's Nat here! I've been out and about quite a bit this year already! Recently I trekked to Phillip Island in Victoria. It is home to a colony of the smallest of all the 17 penguin species in the world. These tiny Aussie icons stand at just 33 centimetres tall and weigh around 1 kilogram. On our first night on Phillip Island we rugged up in our winter woollies and went along to see the penguin's parade along the foreshore. It's amazing to think that the Phillip Island penguin colony has been coming ashore in the same spot thing every night since the 1920's!
While we were on Phillip Island we also got to meet a Koala Ranger. He has the "Top Job" of looking after koalas' everyday. We went out into the field with him while he tagged a koala. It was pretty cool – he had to climb up a tree to get it down. It took ages but he finally lured the koala down into the arms of a researcher. The koala was so cute that we forgot about Ash the Ranger- he was left hanging in the tree calling for help! It was funny, probably not so funny for Ash though.
Phillip Island was awesome; we are definitely going to go back so we can bring you some more stories. Next time I want to show you the seals that live out on seal rocks - there are thousands of them… only problem is that they STINK!
See you soon guys,
Nat x
