When I moved to Adelaide to bring you the coolest stories South Australia has to offer I felt like a kid in a candy store – there was just soooo much to choose from - I didn’t know where to start!
As it turns out, it didn’t take me long to set my sights on one of the most spectacular destinations in the southern state – THE FLINDERS RANGES.
So I loaded the car, dragged the cameraman out of bed and set off on a 5 day road trip that proved to be as funny as it was adventurous. From hitch-hiking dogs to camel battering; sheep sheering to outback dehydration - this trip has everything! But of course nothing ever goes to plan…
Our final story was meant to be the highlight of the whole trip – trekking through Wilpena Pound which is a natural amphitheatre that, from the sky, looks like a huge crater. However the perfect weather we had all week suddenly disappeared and the sky went black as the first drops of rain hit the dry outback soil.
But we’d never let a few drops of rain spoil a good time! So off we went to scale the side of Wilpena Pound with a custom made water proof cover for the camera (a garbage bag with a hole cut in it)! It took us almost an hour to get to the top, and when we arrived we were greeted by howling winds, torrential rain and a view that consisted of clouds, clouds and ah… more clouds!
Lucky we left when we did because the roads were flooded about an hour afterwards and then we would have needed a raft and a life jacket to get home!!!
Keep it real Wilders! Col
** Keep an eye out for some Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies! About 16 years ago there were only 50 of them left in the wild - now there's almost 1000! Talk about a BOUNCEBACK!!! **
