I’m personally in two minds on the matter, but last night we did a story at the Adelaide Gaol and it was one of the coolest yet creepiest experiences of my life!
OK, so the story goes…
Campey (the cameraman) and I have been wanting to play with a few movie styles for a while now. We talked about doing a spy movie; a fairytale; a kung fu movie – even a musical! But you can’t go past a good old fashioned ghost story!
So we rounded up the troops (including about 6 extras who work in our news room) and headed down to the Adelaide Gaol. There we were greeted by Penny – a ghost tour guide who is a strong believer in all things supernatural. While her stories were very cool (and scary) we decided it probably wasn’t enough to simply hit record and film her talking. We want all the Wilders out there in TV Land to experience these stories, not just hear about them.
We spent about a week writing scripts, storyboarding, playing with different ghost effects and creating a lighting plan until we were finally ready to film. But we didn’t expect to have some ACTUAL ghostly experiences during the shoot…
I decided to explore the Gaol alone while the crew were getting ready for the next scene. Tess and I play very scared Totally Wild reporters throughout the film and what better way to act scared than to actually feel it?
I wandered into the dark corridors of C-Wing and suddenly found myself fixated on Cell 87. It was the only cell with the food slot open and I could feel every single hair on my body stand on end. Ignoring the voice in my head telling me to run back to the crew, I slowly made my way over to the gap in the door and put my face inches away from the darkness.
There was a moment where nothing happened – time stood still… but only for a moment…
Without warning the light in the cell flashed bright yellow, but disappeared as quickly as it had arrived. My heart was thumping, desperate to escape its cage. As I turned to run I could feel spider webs covering my face, but there was nothing there. All I could think about was something Penny had told me… ‘When you have an encounter, it’s like electricity dancing softly on your skin…’
Wilders, you may not believe in ghosts. You may treat that story the same way I treated Penny’s… but don’t make your mind up until you’ve seen our Totally Wild Ghost Story… IT’S OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!
Stay Wild! Col
