Adam lands in Dubbo where he meets the only two African Elephants in the country!
Hey! I haven't done a blog in AGES!! It's about time too because I've been so stoked ever since my trip to Dubbo. I got to meet AFRICAN Elephants when I visited Taronga Western Plains Zoo!! How cool is that? The two girls I met are the only two that exist in Australia and they are really something special. The size difference between African and Asian Elephants is astonishing, they are MASSIVE. They make different sounds to the Asians as well. While the Asians make high pitched squeals and trumpets the African girls make deep rumbling sounds and deafening trumpets, especially when you're only a few feet away!
Filming with animals is always a challenge and you have to be aware of the species you're working with and what they might be capable of doing. Whenever you're around an elephant you always need to treat it with respect and understand its boundaries. On most occasions keepers will give us a good insight on an animal's specific personality.
At one point I was delivering a piece to camera and I felt a trunk wrap around me - I said to the keeper "what's she doing?" he replied, "probably just trying to pick you up!"- Haha even though I love animals and especially elephants, that did freak me out a touch because they could pick you up and throw you anywhere they like!
It all came together to make a great story and I was lucky enough to get a big wet elephant kiss to top it off. It felt like a vacuum cleaner on you're skin - only with a lot of slurp involved!
If you have a question about these big girls send it in! totallywild@networkten.com.au

PS - My other reason for loving these elephants is that they have big ears - just like me! =P
