Tarantulas. Probably not the first animal that would pop in to mind when you're considering a new pet… right?
Well I found out when I was stuck in a little room with 300 of them, that they actually make for pretty amazing companions!
They're quiet and very low maintenance creatures. The hardest part about keeping an 8 legged friend as a pet is probably the set up.
What you’ll need:
- a fish tank/ terrarium with a secure lid (tarantulas are great at escaping!)
- soil for bedding
- something for them to hide under like a little log
- a water dish
- a heat pad if there isn’t a warm room to keep them in
- a light- if you want to be fancy
Once that’s out of the way they just need to be fed once or twice a week on something as simple as crickets, and a cage clean every 4-6 months.
So they may be easy to look after but they aren’t exactly the pet to get if you’re up for a play…
Tarantulas can easily get stressed out and injured so you won’t be able to handle the spider too much. And of course there’s a danger to you too- as they are venomous and they do bite!
Make sure you do plenty of research before asking your Mum and Dad to add a spider to your family, and check out TW Wild on Monday to get a good look at these guys- it’ll give you goose bumps!
