What’s New For Autumn
Pansy ‘Plentifall’
The Pansy Plentifall Trailing series from Floriana is an exciting development in plant breeding that is now available to the Australian gardening public. Trailing Plentifall pansies have an amazing, flat spreading habit that makes them simply perfect for growing in hanging baskets, window boxes, urns and containers.
Vigorous, easy-to-grow Plentifall pansies make an ideal groundcover and may be planted to soften the edges of paved areas and retaining walls. Trailing Plentifall pansies have an exceptional branching habit and spread up to 60cm across. The mid-sized flowers of Plentifall offer gardeners even more value by recovering quickly after rain and watering ensuring full and generous flower coverage for months at time.
• Position: Full sun
• Height: 15-20cm approx.
• Width: 60cm approx.
• Flowering: 6-8 weeks after planting
• Growing Tip: Cooler weather produces larger blooms, deeper colours and more prominent petal markings. Remove spent flowers to encourage more flowers. One seedling is sufficient for a 25cm container. Fill larger pots quickly by planting 2-3 seedlings.
Mizuna Combo – Salad greens
Mizuna Combo is a mix of green and deep red leaves that have frilly edges and a mild flavour.
Mizuna is an easy to grow oriental vegetable that may be harvested leaf by leaf for continuous cropping. It is best enjoyed in salad mixes when the leaves are young. Mizuna may also be steamed, stir fried or pickled.
Believed to have been originally domesticated in Central Asian Himalayas, Mizuna tolerates cool conditions and most soil types, but prefers a well-drained position in full sun or part shade. Mizuna should be protected from snails and kept moist in dry weather, but not over watered. Leaves are ready to harvest within 4-8 weeks of planting, subject to local conditions. For baby leaf salad ‘greens’ plant seedlings 10-15cm apart, for larger leaves suitable for cooking plant at 45cm intervals.
