1. The New Cut: One length.

Whether it sits down on your chest, or sits on your collarbones, layers are over, and one-length hair is in. Which is great, because it immediately adds perceived thickness to fine hair, and can be worn beautifully straight and sleek, or messy and tousled or curled and waved, vintage-style/. Fresh one-length cuts can be found on Scarlett Johannson, Jennifer Aniston or the big new model on the scene, Arizona Muse, who's classic jaw-line bob is ridiculously versatile. A texturising cream, like Bumble & Bumble Brilliantine (pricey but worth it and you only use the teeniest amount) will both smooth down your hair, or muss and tousle it up, or try Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Mousse on damp hair for waves and movement.

2. The New Style: Modern 70s.

The '70s have come back in a big way, from flares and floppy hats to platforms and clogs, to hair that is softly waved and curled, and usually centre-parted, although full, eye-skimming fringes are also big right now. The waves are not as "flicky" as, say Farah Fawcett, but definitely with soft curls and movement around the cheekbones and eyes. Get the look by getting hair mostly straight first, then using a big barrel tong, softly curling some sections around the face and crown back off the face, pointing the tong vertically, and tugging the curl as it sets. Then brush out. Keeping the curls and waves loose is the key to keeping it modern. I like the BabylissPRO Ceramic 38mm curling iron for big curls.

3. The New Colour: Block.

Ombre and balayage, where the mid-lengths to the tips are highlighted haphazardly so as to appear naturally sunkissed while the top section of the hair remains dark, has been huge for a couple of years, but is making way for hair that is one colour. If there are highlights, they don't stray too far from the base colour - they're more for depth and variation of shade, rather than deliberate highlights. Think of it as "dessert hair" - chocolates, cherry, caramel, honeycomb... hair is shiny and healthy again, and all of those warm tones we've avoided for years in favour of earthy ash tones, are back. Which is great news for winter. Use a specific colour-enhancing shampoo like Goldwell Colorglow IQ to maintain and support your lovely new colour.
