1. Create a Strawberry Tower
What you’ll need:
• 3 coloured buckets in 3 ascending sizes (make sure they have drainage holes in the bottom
• 9-12 strawberry plants
• Potting mix
Method: Fill the smallest pot with potting mix. Then fill the medium and large pot half way with potting mix. Stack the pots on top of each other (largest at the bottom, smallest at the top) to form three tiers. Plant the three layers with strawberry plants topping up with potting mix as you go. Water them in well.
2. Create a secret Flowery Hideaway
What you’ll need:
• 3 squat pots
• 3 climbing plants like Clematis or Honeysuckle
• 3 x 6ft tall stakes
• Garden tie
NOTE: If your child is allergic to bees don’t undertake this project.
Method: Fill the three pots with potting mix and plant them out with climbing plants. Place the pots in a triangle roughly 1-1.5 metres apart (big enough for a kid to hide under). Place a stake in each pot and tie them together at the top to form a tepee. In time the tepee will be covered with flowers and foliage. The perfect kiddy hideaway!
3. Get your kids eating their greens with their own Mini Vegetable Garden
• Colourful Trough pot
• Potting mix
• A mix of vegetable seedlings in season (kids love miniature varieties)
Tip: Make your own fun colourful signs.
Method: Fill the trough with potting mix and plant it out with vegetable seedlings that are in season. Try to choose varieties that kids will enjoy. Eg. they love broccoli (trees)! In spring try planting bite-sized tomatoes and crunchy carrots. Water and liquid feed regularly.
4. Make gardening fun with these hairy pots.
• Plain terracotta pots
• Google eyes, paint etc to make a face
• Ornamental grass plants eg. Carex
• Potting mix
Method: Decorate the pots however you like. Use googly eyes and paint to form a face. Then plant the pots out with ornamental grasses and strappy leafed plants to form crazy hair!
