Madcap Café
Today more Aussies are dealing with a mental illness than experiencing a common cold. It’s everywhere, but often misunderstood. The MadCap café is one of Australia’s best examples of how simple, social inclusion can improve the mental health of our community. We take a closer look.
Madcap Cafés (run by ermha inc.) provide jobs and opportunities for people experiencing mental illness to become functioning, included members of our community. It’s about recovering by being an active participant rather than a passive recipient. For locations and further info: www.madcapcafe.org
Ermha inc. (Eastern Regions Mental Health Association) is a non-government organisation in the South East of Melbourne, which has been delivering support to people experiencing mental illness for over 25 years. Ermha inc. programs promote, develop and sustain the independence and community inclusion of people experiencing mental ill health. For further info: www.ermha.org

Nicole Avery
Mum of five and Mummy Blogger, Nicole Avery, has found that a lot of mums feel like they are living in a state of constant chaos, and desperately want to get organized but don’t know where to start! This feeling is often most prevalent at a new stage in a family's life - a new baby, starting school or returning to work. Extra time pressures accentuate the current state of disorganisation and it can seem impossible to find time to plan! Nicole assures us it is never too late to start and explains how it can make your life so much easier.
Nicole’s Tips:
Keep it simple, start small and focus on the basics:
1. Build routines for your kids – they give the kids stability and a base to grow their independence. Download morning routine document.
2. Menu plan – mealtime is a big part of family life. Streamline this task and you significantly reduce the stress levels at dinnertime each day and free yourself up plenty of time. Download meal planner.
3. Plan time for yourself, your kids, your partner and most importantly plan time for fun!
Nicole’s book: Planning with Kids: A Guide to Organising the Chaos to Make More Time for Parenting, Wright Books, RRP: $29.95

Matina Jewell is a remarkable woman, who at 23, was promoted to acting Major in the Australian Army. She accelerated through the ranks and served with distinction on challenging overseas operations, but it wasn’t until she served as a United Nations peacekeeper during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict that she experienced war first hand. When Matina returned to Australia she discovered that the battles back home were every bit as difficult as surviving in a war zone. Her novel, Caught in the Crossfire, carries an inspirational message of hope and heroism against the odds. Today she tells us more about her extraordinary experiences.
