The Culinary World Cup Cook Off: France Vs Mexico
France: Baguettes with Chocolate
In France at breakfast time, hot chocolate is often served in a bowl that everyone dips their baguettes into.
1. Heat up milk, cream, and sugar over a low flame. Bring to a simmer, but don't let it boil.
2. Take off heat and add chocolate (chopped into small pieces). Stir until chocolate melts and it becomes smooth.
3. Pour into bowl and serve with whipped cream and powdered cocoa.
Voilà!
Mexico: Cheese Burrito
To make this Cook Off fair, we need to prepare a Mexican dish that is largely bread based, so I've selected the burrito! And like all good Mexican food, it’s both a meal and an activity!
1. Warm the tortillas following the packet instructions. Meanwhile, make the filling.
Heat the oil in a large frying pan, add a chopped onion, 2 crushed garlic cloves, and 1 green capsicum and 1 red capsicums (chopped) and cook over a medium heat, stirring, for 3 minutes until they begin to soften. Add a chopped red chilli and some cumin if you want and stir for 1 minute.
2. Add a can of red kidney beans onto a plate and lightly crush with a fork, then add to the frying pan together with a tin of corn and one chopped tomato.
Add a good squirt of tomato sauce and a dash of chilli sauce and a splash of water and continue to cook gently for about 4 minutes.
3. Serve the hot bean mixture, some lettuce, some cheese and some natural yogurt in separate bowls for everyone to help themselves. To assemble a burrito, place some lettuce in the middle of a tortilla, spoon some of the bean mixture on top, add some grated cheese and top with a dollop of yogurt. Roll up and eat immediately.
