Andy Lee

The Real Story

If you've just read Hamish's bio, you probably already know Andy's recent performance history, as they have both travelled a very similar path since meeting in 2001. So let's go further back.

Andy wanted to be an actor from a young age but had a terrible lisp during Primary School (Hamish still has one). Hence, he was given only one line in the Grade 5 play: "besides I saw them coming in the distance".

Many years and countless speech pathology classes later, Andy met Hamish at Uni and the duo debuted at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival both aged 21. The show named 'Situation Nowhere' was based on a bet laid down by Andy that Hamish's shitbox car couldn't make it to the top of Australia. The pair didn't see a problem with skipping uni and leaving immediately to find out whether the car would make it, not packing any clothes or supplies for the near 5000 km journey.

In the following years came radio, TV and podcasts as mentioned on the previous page so we won’t bother you again with the details (did we mention the boys are number 1?).

Initially, Andy thought he would grow up to be a musician and began playing music in pubs at the age of 16 with his older brother, Cam. His Mum and Dad let him play on school nights, but at that age, Andy ensured he was always carrying a piece of musical equipment in the venues, so security wouldn't ask him for ID. Andy still plays in his band 'Zoophyte' - you may have heard their music on Triple J or at the different music festivals in Australia.

Growing up, field hockey made up most of Andy's life. During school he had a 4-week hockey tour of Britain that included a night at Scotland's boarding school, Gordonstoun, where the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips was attending. Although he gave it a solid crack, Zara would not kiss him.

If a scene required reverse full-frontal nudity, Andy would require a body double as a result of sliding down a hill playing war games with mates in 1991, when a glass cut a 3-inch gash in his bottom. The scar remains. In 1993 Andy also severed two nerves in his arm and lost the feeling in the top of his thumb. He then made money putting his thumb on the heater at school for 50c a burn.

In February 2000, the Grow with ANZ advertisements where filmed in Andy's family home. Believing  this opportunity would be the perfect launching pad, Andy begged to appear in one of the  commercials. Andy can be seen as Pub Customer Number 57 and Internet Café Customer Number  15.  He is convinced that it was his well-considered and executed Internet Guy role that later landed him a commercial television deal.
