Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world with two in every three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70.
More than 30 Australians die each week from this almost entirely preventable disease.
Sunburn increases the risk of skin cancer, yet on an average summer weekend in 2006-07, 1.8 million adults and 400,000 teenagers got sunburnt .
National Skin Cancer Action Week takes place Nov 16-22, and it aims to reinforce simple SunSmart messages to the community in order to reduce the risk of skin cancer.
In response to the concerning incidence of people getting burnt through inadequate sun protection, the Cancer Council promotes a comprehensive range of sun protection measures:

"Skin cancer is one of the easiest cancers to prevent," says Cancer Council Australia's CEO Professor Olver. "We Australians need to balance our love of the outdoors with protecting ourselves from a common and potentially fatal illness that claims more than 1600 lives a year, which in most cases could be prevented."
