Helen Kapalos began her career as a reporter on ABC Radio in Newcastle in 1994 before moving to SBS.
Helen Kapalos began her career as a reporter on ABC Radio in Newcastle in 1994 before moving to SBS after winning a national scholarship.
She worked in several areas at SBS, including news, the Network documentary indigenous cultural affairs program, ICAM, and the health show, Second Opinion.
Helen then returned to Newcastle and spent several years in commercial radio and TV, including the Nine Network’s regional affiliate NBN, where she wrote, directed and produced an award-winning documentary on the closure of BHP.In 2001 Helen was approached to join the Nine Network as a reporter on National Nine News where she covered breaking news events such as the Waterfall train disaster and the historic Sydney Gang rape trial. She also played a key role in the 2004 Athens Olympics coverage, where she reported for several news and current affairs programs from the Greek capital and across Europe.
Upon her return she was appointed host of the Late News program Nightline. In addition to that role, she presented the weekly news segment on the Network’s flagship current affairs program Sunday, alongside host Jana Wendt.
In 2006, Helen was one of the red carpet hosts for TEN’s Brownlow Medal telecast. Helen also presents news segments for the TEN Network’s National News and she hosted the Quill Awards in 2008. Helen continues to utilise her extensive journalism credentials, when she is called on to report on breaking stories for the Network. In 2009, Helen played a key role in a story which made international headlines, fronting local and national coverage of the devastating Black Saturday bushfires. Helen currently presents Network Ten Melbourne’s 5pm news with Mal Walden.
