Daryl Beattie
Daryl Beattie, one of Australia’s most loved motorsport heroes, has been an integral part of Network Ten’s motorsport team since 1999.
Daryl rocketed to international motorcycle racing fame in 1993 when he won the 500cc German Grand Prix at Hockenheim and finished 3rd in his first full season of Grand Prix Racing. Due to his modest and relaxed nature, Daryl became one of the most popular riders on the circuit and was one of the only riders to get close to Mick Doohan during his reign of supremacy.
In 1995 Daryl was leading the Championship until he broke his collarbone. He came back from the injury and the World title came down to the second last round in Argentina, Doohan came first and Daryl came second – and that was the finishing order of the 1995 World Championship.
In 1997 the combination of constantly putting his life on the line and regular serious injuries (including having all five toes on his left foot amputated) helped Daryl make the decision to retire.
Although 1995 was the highlight of Daryl’s career, he enjoyed six successful years competing in the 500cc World Championship and a career in motorbikes that spanned over 18 years.
The road racing days are over but you can still find Daryl Beattie where it all started - Riding motorcycles in the Australian outback, along with his other passion "flying" Helicopters, Fixwing aircraft, Paragliders and the odd hot air balloon.
While Daryl has been retired since 1997, he still maintains strong friendships with many of the top riders and mechanics in the Moto GP paddock.
Daryl is an expert commentator for ONE. His duties include the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, MotoGP World Motorcycle Championship and the Red Bull Air Race series.
