Pete
Pete is the Guerrilla Gardeners' landscaping expert.
1. Can you please describe your experience to date?
I studied landscape design and construction at Ryde Tafe. I run my own business doing garden preparation for sale for people who are selling their houses. We work exclusively for John McGrath Real Estate with a furniture company called Coco Republic. We do a mixture of potted landscape rental and hard landscaping to present the properties. We also do plant hire for film, television and events, as well as an online delivery division that delivers small potted plants as an alternative to cut flowers – www,deluxeplants.com.au.
2. How would you define your gardening style?
I don’t really have a particular style. I try and make the best use of the space and combine the interests and lifestyle of the client.
It always amazes me that people are so out of touch with their habits. By this I mean people who want a full English garden but only want to spend two hours a month tending it. Match your style with the amount of work required.
3. Favourite plant or flower?
Frangipani is the quintessential Sydney plant. The smell reminds me of summer and can transport me to an island holiday with just a hint of its scent.
4. Favourite gardening tool?
I have a shovel called ‘the silver bullet’ and it has never missed. It was given to me when I first started gardening and has been the most durable and versatile tool I own. Needless to say Dave is not allowed to even look at it let alone touch it.
5. Where do you get your inspiration and design ideas from?
I am usually inspired from everyday items. Shapes and colours and textures from foods or buildings or even people. I tend to work backwards from shapes and heights and then decide what plants would go best.
6. Have you done guerrilla gardening overseas?
To do what we are doing is a bit like breaking the rules of fight club. Guerrilla gardeners don’t usually claim their spaces for reco but let’s just say the movement is gaining momentum across the globe.
7. What do you see the purpose of guerrilla gardening to be?
For me guerrilla gardening has dual purposes. First and foremost it is about making a space into a better place to use. It’s about sometimes making a usable place for people to actually enjoy hanging out in and other times to showcase a design or plant group in an area that is currently being wasted.
For me, my client base in my regular life are very conservative, so in my guerrilla life it’s about seeing my wildest ideas come to life.
8. Have you ever been caught guerrilla gardening? And if so, what were the consequences?
Never!
9. Do you have any other hobbies?
I grew up in the country so fishing, horse riding and country music are all things I am passionate about. I surf and wake board and I live at the beach, so pretty much love any water sports. My brother in law works for the Western Force Rugby Union team so I spend my winters supporting them and I also love the Swannines!
