A.K.A. "Quinno"
Name: Quinn Darragh
Age: 33
Lifeguarding for: 10 years
Local Beach: Bronte
Have you always wanted to be a lifeguard? Not until I was about 16 years. I grew up in Bronte and have always loved surfing. I've competed in surf events, particularly Aussie titles. I've seen situations were lifeguards have saved a family from drowning, and a kid from being destroyed on the rocks. That's what made me want to join.
What's your most memorable rescue? A mass rescue at Bondi, pulling in 10 in a row all of whom were on their last legs, grabbing 2 by the hair, completely submerged. We were definitely their last chance.
What do you think are the most important characteristics of a lifeguard? The ability to work and get along with work mates (a lifeguard tower can be a small place when in rains), communication skills and being able to read the surf.
What's it like when there is an emergency? Pretty impressive when you see the boys in action. Some are known for being a bit vocal and dramatic, others are dead calm. It make for exciting viewing!
What kind of dumb things do you see people doing? Putting their gear under a 'dangerous current do not swim' sign and then diving straight into the water in front of it.
Where did you work before Bondi, and what made you choose Bondi? I worked as an engineer with Qantas for 10 years and a paramedic for the past 3 years. In my opinion, Bondi is the most interesting beach on the coast. It's fun, but quite dangerous and attracts the most diverse crowd.
In my spare time I like to.: Surf, drink my home brew and swim competitively.
If I could spend a day with anyone (dead or alive), it would be: Barrack Obama because some people think we look alike.
