Mark Howard
Mark Howard will take on the role of roving sports journalist for ONE HD in 2009. He will join Network Ten's extensive coverage of PGA Tour events, Formula 1, Australian MotoGP and IPL Twenty20 along with boundary riding for AFL games.
Mark began his career employed by Bernie Ecclestone working on the Formula One World Championship Tour. Based in London, Mark travelled to over 60 races in 4 seasons. His very first, very nervous interview, was in Italy, with Michael Schumacher.
Mark has been with Network Ten for four years. Originally employed to work on the V8 Supercars, his role rapidly expanded to include reporting on the 5pm News as well as travel and lifestyle presenter for 9am With David and Kim for two years.
But it is sport where ‘Howie’ has made his major contribution. Usually the man in the midst of the action at ground level, he has reported and commentated on a huge variety of TEN events. These include AFL, Formula One, Moto GP, Golf, Beach Cricket, Soccer, Cycling, Red Bull Air Races, Brownlow Medal Red Carpet and more. He has also covered the Australian Open (Tennis) and Melbourne Cup several times, as well as the Sydney and Athens Olympics.
Along the way highlights have included live interviews with David Beckham, Sir Viv Richards, Lewis Hamilton, Kelly Slater, Shane Warne, Sir Richard Branson, Elle Macpherson, Kiss, Maria Sharapova, Roger Federer, John Daly and his sporting idol, Allan Border.
Howie counts himself very fortunate to have seen some huge sporting moments from the best seats in the house. Interviewing Casey Stoner while being covered in champagne after Casey had just won his home grand prix. Being grabbed by security amidst the mayhem of interviewing Buddy Franklin mid match after Buddy’s 100th goal and speaking to David Beckham in front of 100,000 people at Sydney’s Telstra Stadium a few of the more memorable.
In the line of duty Mark has been knocked to the canvas in a bout with a 150kg cage fighter, been hit in the head by an Allan Donald bouncer, taken the controls of a Red Bull stunt plane, been chased by a bull across Rod Laver arena, had his leg spin bowling destroyed by the current South African cricket team, been humiliated in a wood chopping competition against multiple world champion David Foster and smashed to bits in a tackling drill with the Gold Coast Titans. On the positive....there was a win in a putting competition with Aaron Baddeley, which Baddeley still refuses to discuss.
When not at work Howie loves to explore the world in the search for the perfect wave. His search has taken him to destinations such as Papua New Guinea, Mexico, Nicaragua and Southern Africa. He play's cricket in the summer for Middle Park and footy in winter for Prahran.
